31 Days to a Positive Inner Voice: Progress Rather Than Perfection

Every day as we actively try to better ourselves, better our self criticism and inner voice, the most important thing to remember is progress rather than perfection. Change does not happen in a day and perfection is unachievable. Give yourself time to grow and become more positive overall.

Perfection Gets in the Way

When we are striving for perfection we get in the way of our own success. Since perfection is not truly achievable it leaves us striving for a loftier goal then we can accomplish. This slows you down, hinders new ideas, leads to self-criticism, and makes your motivation inconsistent.

Progress Motivates Learning, Not Failure

When we live life with a goal to better ourselves and progress we motivate learning. Progress is sustainable. Considering no person is perfect everybody needs to better themselves and will never stop needing to do so. This means focusing on progress can last a lifetime.

Don’t Be Hard on Yourself

Although there are many steps that help each of us to stay positive and change our inner voice there is one thing that needs to be remembered. Don’t be hard on yourself. Our inner voice most often comes from us verbally abusing ourselves internally. Self criticism lowers our mood, can cause depression, anxiety, and generally changes our outlook on life.

Focus on The Journey

This is one way mindfulness comes into play. Focus on the situation at hand rather than worrying about the past, future, or inconceivable possibilities of what might happen. Enjoy the moment as you’re in it.

Redirect Your Thoughts

As you think something negative about a situation, event, or person (including yourself) redirect to a positive. What is going well? What’s a positive about the person (including yourself)? How can you change the negative? If it’s not possible to control then stop dwelling on it.
